ESM appoints Nicoletta Mascher Head of Banking
Luxembourg – The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) has appointed Nicoletta Mascher to the position of Head of Banking.

Ms Mascher previously held managerial positions at the ECB’s Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and the Bank of Italy. She also worked in the private sector as a financial analyst.

She is a graduate of Luigi Bocconi University of Milan, where she received a Master’s degree in economics. Ms Mascher also studied financial market theory and financial mathematics. She is a chartered accountant and auditor.

Zu den Berichten „Defizite in Rom“ (F.A.Z. vom 29. September) und „Lega-Chef Salvini: Europa ist mir völlig egal“ (F.A.Z. vom 1. Oktober) : In einem Bericht über die Haushaltspläne der italienischen Regierung heißt es in der Samstagsausgabe, dass „ Europa im Staatenrettungsfonds ESM Garantien für Italiens Staatsschulden übernahm“. Diese Behauptung wird in einem weiteren Bericht am Montag wiederholt. Die Aussage, der ESM habe Garantien für Italiens Staatsschulden übernommen, ist falsch. Italien hat nie den Zugang zu den internationalen Finanzmärkten verloren.

On the articles “Deficits in Rome” (F.A.Z. of 29 September) and “League boss Salvini: I don’t care about Europe at all” (F.A.Z. of 1 October): In the article in the Saturday edition about the budgetary plans of the Italian government, the claim is made that “Europe has taken over guarantees for Italy’s state debt via the state rescue fund ESM”. This claim is repeated in the other article published on Monday. The claim that the ESM is guaranteeing Italy’s state debt is wrong. Italy has never lost access to international financial markets.

Er is een discussie gaande over het verdiepen van de Economische en Monetaire Unie. Dus is het goed om daar regelmatig met elkaar over van gedachten te wisselen. Hij is natuurlijk onderdeel van dat debat, ik heb daar ook ideeën over.

What did you talk about with Minister Hoekstra?

There is a debate about the deepening of Economic and Monetary Union. So it is good to regularly exchange ideas with each other. Of course he is part of that debate, I also have ideas about that.

Staff Statement Following the Fifth Post-Programme Surveillance Mission to Cyprus

European Commission staff, in liaison with staff from the European Central Bank (ECB), visited Cyprus from 24 to 28 September to conduct the fifth post-programme surveillance (PPS) mission and undertake specific monitoring of macroeconomic imbalances under the Macroeconomic Imbalance Procedure (MIP). The mission was coordinated with an International Monetary Fund (IMF) Article IV mission. Staff from the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) also participated in the mission on aspects related to the ESM's Early Warning System.
