Job description

The ESM is looking for a Financial Sector and Market Analysis expert to support our team in the Financial Sector and Market Analysis division within the Chief Economist department of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). You will report to the Head of the Financial Sector and Market Analysis division.
The Financial Sector and Market Analysis division provides risk analysis on financial sector developments and market activity of bank and non-bank financial institutions, and develops technical advice on regulatory and policy matters related to the euro area financial sector and its member states. The division is a key contributor to the design and implementation of analytical tools for the ESM to achieve its enhanced mandate.
You will be part of a team tasked with the development and integration of the existing analytical toolkit to detect risks stemming from the financial sector and assess how economic and policy developments can affect the performance and riskiness of financial institutions and the financial sector of euro area countries. This analytical development will as well support investigations about the impact of financial sector risks and vulnerabilities on the real economy and country debt sustainability. You will support the team in following financial market developments and executing its risk-monitoring and reporting processes on financial markets.
Key Accountabilities
Serve as subject matter expert on banking and/or financial sector risks, financial stability, and market analysis.
Contribute to applying and developing databases, analytical tools, and models providing insight into economic and financial developments, macro-financial interlinkages and risks in euro area countries and at the euro area level.
Produce high-quality research on topics related to the ESM’s role as a crisis resolution organisation, specifically focusing on systemic and macroeconomic risks related to the banking sector and financial markets.
Monitor and analyse financial sector developments in euro area countries and at euro area level.
Produce notes and reports to support the ESM's monitoring and analysis of economic and financial developments in the euro area.
Contribute to policy design and translating analytical results into policy guidance.
Support the ESM’s interactions with the economic and research teams of peer organisations in the euro area and globally, such as the European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, as well as researchers and analysts in academia and financial market institutions.
Key Background & Experience
A master-level degree, preferably in economics, econometrics, banking, or finance. PhD is considered a strong asset.
Minimum of eight years of experience in analysing banks and other financial intermediaries and primary/secondary market information with public databases (like S&P Capital IQ, Fitch Connect, Bloomberg, Refinitiv Eikon, Dealogic, etc.).
Experience in market analysis of financial institutions gained in investment banks, asset management firms, international financial institutions, central banks, or other relevant authorities.
Solid knowledge of data handling and statistical techniques.
Ability to transform data into compelling and persuasive written and oral arguments.
Ability to draft technical documents and present information professionally and concisely.
Fluency in English, including excellent drafting skills.
Ability to work effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
Experience working with cross-functional and international teams would be an asset.
An academic publication track record would be an asset.
