Traineeships – Economic and Market Analysis

Job description

Deadline for application: 3 February 2026. We are looking for candidates to assist the EMA division within the Chief Economist Department.

The Economic and Market Analysis (EMA) Division focuses on the monitoring and analysis of aggregate and cross-country euro area macroeconomic and financial market trends and risks. EMA also monitors global developments to detect external risks to the euro area and regularly engages with experts in academia, peer institutions, and financial markets. The Division conducts policy-relevant research and is seeking support for analytical projects in international macroeconomics and sovereign bond markets, as well as assistance with regular monitoring work.  
 

Purpose Of The Traineeship

Trainees will collaborate closely with experienced professionals within the organisation to gain hands-on experience. They will contribute to the division's daily tasks and longer-term analytical projects. ESM colleagues will assist them in their duties. Trainees may carry out an agreed-upon research project aligned with the Division’s agenda. The specific research topic will be identified closer to the start of the traineeship to match the candidate’s expertise and the Division's needs.

The role will likely include:

  • Assist in compiling and managing large economic and market datasets.

  • Support in conducting econometric and theoretical analysis.

  • Assist in presenting findings in internal notes, presentations, or seminars. 

 

Key Background & Experience

Essential:

  • A candidate (or recent graduate within one year of graduation) for a university degree  in economics, macroeconomics, finance, or a related field.
  • A sound understanding of economic issues affecting the euro area. 

  • Practical experience working with large datasets, including financial market data, macroeconomic data and/or other micro data.

  • Strong analytical skills in panel data and time-series econometrics. 

  • Knowledge of econometrics and programming software packages, such as Python or Stata.

  • Fluency in English, both oral and written.

 

Desired:

  • Pursuing a PhD in economics, macroeconomics, finance, or a related field.
  • Research experience with financial market, trade or cross-border financial flow data.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python and its data-processing and analysis ecosystem.
