Agenda

“Deepening the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)”

Part of the set of lunch-time seminars at the European Commission to discuss the White Paper on the Future of Europe

Fifteen years after the introduction of the euro, the common currency is now an integral part of our lives. It is the second most used currency in the world, shared by almost 340 million citizens in 19 Member States. The euro has lowered the economic transaction costs and contributed to advance in the completion of our internal market. At the same time, the crisis of the past years has tested the integrity of the euro area and the limits of the current institutional architecture.

Against this backdrop, the debate will be organised around the following questions:
  1. What is the likely future of EMU and what are the next steps that will need to be adopted ?
  2. What are the potential challenges for the future of EMU ?
  3. What is the role of research and innovation policy in the future Euro area ?
